The word diversity in America is as powerful as the words freedom and justice. Our great nation was founded upon a diverse people. Over the course of America’s settlement, establishment, and growth there are different colors, races, creeds, and beliefs that make up the core of America.
We are seeing the beauty of diversity in every area of life, in every area of advancement, and in every area of opportunity. I can look at the Office of the US President and see a qualified African American male as our Commander in Chief. I can look at the US Attorney General and see Eric Holder, another qualified African American Male. In our President’s Cabinet, I can look up our Secretary of State and see Hillary Clinton, an intelligent woman of standard, who also was in contention for the US Presidency. What really moved me this week was the turnout of the Oscar winners as well as the Golden Globe Awardees leading up to this year. I was thrilled to see the level of diversity being deepened and strengthened through the participation and acknowledgment of diversified works of entertainment and of expertise.
Slumdog Millionaire, which was voted Best Motion Picture of the Year, out of Mumbai, India, impacted our nation so much so, that the young children who starred in the movie were blessed with a free home! There were more minority participants—from presenters to performers—that were apart of the arts and motion picture industry. Hollywood has been embracing the diversified makeover that has been long overdue.
This same makeover is needed in our very own communities. In order for us as a community to move forward in the direction of change that our President Barack Obama is showing us, we need to honestly deduce ourselves and our efforts. We can no longer afford to carry on with ‘business as usual’ demeanors and attitudes. I do not know about you, but I have had enough of people pointing fingers in our community, and focusing on the problems; rather than acknowledging the problems in means of remedying them for us, the community.
Today should mark a new day on the calendar of change that coincides with our daily lives. Today is the day that we renew our minds in order to progressively move forward to enhance, build up, and sustain our community. The Borough of Roselle is my home, and I am a product of our community. Let us together, forge forward on the path of change and transparency to procure a community that will continue to educate our kids, recognize true humanitarian efforts, and promote safety and comfort for all of our residents.
We make up our community Roselle, and it is time that we wake up and do what is best for not only ourselves, but for our children, the future of our community.
